'The Island of Lost Maps' is a book about the true cartographic crimes committed by one Gilbert Bland who went around stealing maps from all over the States. i think you might find it rather interesting.

I remember as a kid in elementary school sitting for hours in fromt of my grandfather's old Rand McNally world atlas. The book was huge, and turning the pages was like turning the page in a giant book of movie posters. I owe a lot of what I know about the layout of the world from just enjoying the colors and shapes in that book. I'm diggin' your interest in science and related topics :-)
